Reader Confessions Tag

I just got tagged in a post by The Backwards Bookshelf and am putting off my end of the year teacher duties…so here I am ready to talk about books and fill out any sort of document with words that don’t pertain to supply lists and class inventories!

My reading confessions, here we are!

1) Have you ever damaged a book?

Guaranteed at some point in my life, intentionally or unintentionally, yes. I try not to…but I take my books everywhere and sometimes the pages get crinkled, wet, or the covers get tattered. (Those are the “well loved books”.) Then, there were my childish scribble and write in everything days…so many books didn’t make it out of that phase alive. Never put your meaningful books within reach of small children who have access to writing utensils!

2) Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

I don’t think so…? But, some of my friends ABHOR cracked spines…so maybe I’ve borrowed one and opened it too much. (I hope not! I try not to..REALLY!)

3) How long does it take you to read a book?

Most books I can read in one or two sittings. Now…with that being said, those are my relaxing “low-key” genres: romance, YA, christian adventure romance, some fantasy. Nonfiction, “classics”, and other reads that make my brain hurt after a long day of encouraging children to learn usually take me a couple months… (mostly because I also read about a twenty-thirty relaxing reads in between).

4) Books that you haven’t finished?

From high school literature class: Oliver Twist… still hope to get around to it someday.

In hopes of broadening my “read” pile a bit: The Chronicles of Narnia, the Hobbit, Little House on the Prairie. (With CoN and LHotP, I stopped in the middle of a book in the middle of the series…but I don’t even remember which ones.)

One I’ll probably never get back to: Rush by Maya Banks.

Still working on Jane Eyre and it has been a few years… BUT I WILL GET THROUGH IT EVENTUALLY!

5) Hyped/popular books you didn’t like?

I wasn’t as big a fan of Wonder as I thought I was going to be…which really bummed me out. I like the premise and I would definitely teach it, but all of my teacher friends are obsessed and in love and although I thought it was okay, I didn’t feel all the emotions everyone else claims to have.

6) Is there a book you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

I’d like to say no. But there are certain genres and certain books that I probably wouldn’t mention to certain people. I don’t like the idea of being embarrassed, but maybe I am still trying to live up to others ideas just a little…then again, if they asked me point blank if I was reading a certain thing, I’m not much of a liar either.

7) How many books do you own?

Way. TOO. MANY. I think when I was leaving undergraduate school I had close to 300 on my shelves…it has been 5 years since then and I’ve moved around and bought a lot more…so we are probably close to double that now…I haven’t stopped to count them. Maybe when I finally get my own place for a longer period of time, I’ll move them all in and set them up and then I’ll count them.

8) Are you a fast or a slow reader?

Slower than some of my good friends who love books, but faster than most.

9) Do you like to buddy read?

Only if they read at the same pace…and we have separate books. When I imagine buddy reading, I imagine elementary school and sharing a book while sitting next to each other on the floor. That was too much pressure for me. If we are laying next to each other and read at the same speed, I wouldn’t mind someone to chat with about certain parts of the book.

10) If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

I would own “We All Should Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie because even though it is thin and a quick read, I find myself looking back on particular quotes often and wanting to share it with EVERYONE.
